Inspiring Sports Day "Khwaishonki Udaan" Inaugurated at DPS Jammu by Sports Minister Satish Sharmaalong with Nuzhat Gul and Aneesa Nabi

The Annual Sports Meet 2024 of Delhi Public School Jammu was inaugurated with grandeur as Sh. Satish Sharma, Cabinet Minister for Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Transport, Science & Technology, Information Technology, Youth Services & Sports, ARI & Training, Government of J&K, officially declared the event open. The ceremony was graced by esteemed dignitaries, including Ms. Nuzhat Gul, JKAS, the first female Secretary of the J&K Sports Council; Ms. Aneesa Nabi, JKAS, Senior Project Manager at J&K Rural Livelihood Mission; Mr. Aman Gupta, the "Ironman of Jammu," renowned for his achievements in international triathlon events; Mr. Archit Puri, Director of PBI India Pvt. Ltd. and a distinguished DPS alumnus with notable Ironman Triathlon accomplishments; Ms. Sidhani Singh, an International Soft Tennis player and DPS alumna; and Mr. Soham Kamotra, J&K's only International Chess Master and a seven-time state champion since 2018, also a proud DPS alumnus. Kunwrani Dr. Ritu Singh, Pro-Vice Chairperson of DPS Jammu, Sh. S.S. Sodhi, Director, DPS Jammu, the Principal, staff, and parents of the school were also present.
The theme of the event, "Khwahishon Ki Udaan – Celebrating Social Bonds, Inclusion, and Peace," encapsulated the spirit of unity and excellence, with over 2,000 students participating in various athletic demonstrations and events. The guests were warmly welcomed with the school band, traditional tilak ceremony.Kunwrani Dr. Ritu Singh, Hon'ble Pro Vice Chairperson, presented tokens of appreciation, including potted plants, khadi certificates, and handcrafted paintings created by the students. She expressed her admiration for the guests, referring to them as role models and future mentors who inspire and guide the students on their journey toward success.

Kunwrani Dr. Ritu Singh, Hon’ble Pro Vice Chairperson, delivered an inspiring address, highlighting the school’s commitment to holistic education and the pivotal role of sports in shaping future leaders. She emphasized how sports instill values of teamwork, discipline, and resilience, preparing students for challenges in all spheres of life. She also expressed her deep appreciation for Ms. Nuzhat Gul, acknowledging her exceptional contributions to nurturing talent and fostering a spirit of sportsmanship in the students. Additionally, she extended her heartfelt gratitude to Aneesa Nabi for her tireless dedication and remarkable efforts in supporting and encouraging the students’ athletic pursuits, further strengthening the sports culture. In her address, she extended heartfelt thanks to all the distinguished guests of honour and worthy parents for their presence and support, stressing the importance of collaboration between the school, parents, and the community in providing a well-rounded education.
Declaring the Sports Meet open, Chief Guest Sh. Satish Sharma released balloons, symbolizing the boundless aspirations of students. Reminiscing about his childhood, he remarked, “Sports have the power to unite and inspire. They teach us discipline, resilience, and teamwork—values that shape character and drive success.” He commended the school’s management, staff, and parents for fostering an environment conducive to excellence in academics, sports, and overall development. The lighting of the Sports Torch by the Chief Guest and other dignitaries symbolized the students' passion for excellence. Reflecting on the school's legacy, Sh. Sharma remarked that he too is a product of DPS school and appreciated the pivotal role DPS Jammu has been playing in J&K’s education landscape over its 27 years of establishment, producing numerous illustrious and elite personalities in society.
Ms. Nuzhat Gul, in her address, emphasized the transformative role of sports in students’ lives, stating, “Sports instill discipline, improve focus, and build confidence. They are essential for holistic growth.” She assured unwavering support from the J&K Sports Council to students aspiring to pursue sports as a career.
Ms. Aneesa Nabi motivated parents to actively engage in their children’s sporting journeys. She remarked, “Parents play a crucial role in nurturing their children’s talents. Your encouragement and participation can make a world of difference in their success stories.”
Sh. S.S. Sodhi, Director DPS Jammu, expressed gratitude to Sh. Satish Sharma for gracing the event and supporting sports initiatives. He praised Ms. Nuzhat Gul’s visionary leadership, which has significantly uplifted sports in J&K, especially for girls, fostering a culture of inclusion and excellence. He also recalled the eminent role played by M.K.Ajatshatru Singh as a Sports Minister from 1996-2002 and his contribution for children in sports.
Earlier, Ms. Ruchi Chabra, Principal, DPS Jammu, welcomed the gathering and also administered the Sports Oath, instilling the values of integrity and fair play in the young participants.
The day began with a melodious rendition by the school choir, "Hum Rahi Hain, Hum Saathi Hain," setting a vibrant tone. A series of enthralling performances followed, including a dynamic group dance titled "Udaan," a Taekwondo drill showcasing martial arts skills, Lazium Drill, Pom -Pom Drill, and the grand March Past led by the House Captains and Vice House Captains.
The event saw spirited participation in sports events such as Ball & Cone Race, Sack Race, Ladder & Hurdle Race, Hoop Rolling Race, Ball Balancing Race, Skip & Run Race, Stick & Cone Balancing Race, and 200m, 400m, and 4x100m relay races. The students showcased exceptional determination, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Chenab House emerged as the Overall Winner of the Sports Day, celebrated during the prize distribution ceremony.
The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Ms. Meenu Gupta, Vice Principal, DPS Jammu, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, parents, staff, and students for their invaluable contributions to the event’s success. The ceremony ended on a patriotic note with the National Anthem, leaving behind a legacy of inspiration and pride.
