Delhi Public School Jammu Collaborates with GMC to Raise Tobacco Awareness

Friday, May 30, 2025

In an earnest effort to empower students with knowledge and help them make informed choices, Delhi Public School Jammu, in collaboration with the Tobacco Control Cell, Government Medical College (GMC), organized a Tobacco Awareness Programme on 26th May 2025, ahead of World No Tobacco Day, observed globally on 31st May.
The programme aimed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption in all its forms—including cigarettes, flavoured e-cigarettes or vapes, and hookah smoking—among the youth. The event was graced by Dr. Lavanya Talwar, a distinguished alumna of DPS Jammu (Batch of 2021–22) and a passionate advocate from the Tobacco Control Cell, GMC, who served as the Resource Person for the day.
Dr. Talwar thoughtfully curated and conducted a highly engaging, interactive session for the students of Classes VII to IX. She shed light on the growing trends of tobacco usage among adolescents and the severe health risks it poses. Through powerful visuals, awareness videos, a myth-busting quiz, and real-life examples, she empowered students to critically evaluate the choices they make and their long-term consequences. “Knowledge is the first step toward prevention,” she remarked, inspiring students to be vocal and vigilant advocates of a tobacco-free society.
As a part of the awareness initiative, students also participated in a Poster Making Competition on the topic – “Tobacco- The Trendy Trap Disguised in Smoke”. The vibrant display of creativity and strong messaging reflected the students' deep understanding and concern for public health. The top ten posters were awarded appreciation certificates, encouraging the budding artists and advocates of change.
In her address, Ms. Ruchi Chabra, Principal, DPS Jammu, urged students to be mindful and cautious of things that come in attractive packaging and offer ‘good experiences’—often a deceptive trap, especially in the case of tobacco. She drew attention to the silent dangers of passive smoking and inspired students to take a firm stand against all forms of tobacco use. She also congratulated all poster competition winners and extended heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Talwar for her valuable guidance and contribution.

Ms. Meenu Gupta, Vice Principal, drew attention to the silent dangers of passive smoking and inspired students to take a firm stand against all forms of tobacco use. She reiterated the importance of such awareness drives in shaping a responsible and informed generation, and praised the enthusiastic participation of students and staff.

The event was a resounding success, made possible under the visionary leadership of the Hon’ble President-RCT, Sh. M.K. Ajatshatru Singh Ji, the Hon’ble PVC, Kunwrani Ritu Singh Ji, and the Hon’ble Director, Sh. S.S. Sodhi Ji, whose unwavering commitment to creating a safe, healthy, and forward-thinking educational environment continues to inspire the entire DPS fraternity.
The programme concluded on a high note with the rendition of the national anthem, leaving students with a renewed sense of pride and purpose, and a strong resolve to lead and promote a tobacco-free life.
